Cedar Roofing Installation Using Shakes Or Shingles
Cedar roofing goes back a long time, having been used as a very rustic barrier from harsh weather conditions. It was natural insect repellent and ideal weather cover, and over time it weathered into a charming gray cover that many modern day homes want to resemble. A well installed cedar shake roofing can last 30-40 years, depending on the climate. To have a better idea of how long a roof like this would last you, it is best to have contractors evaluate your area to give you a solid estimate, so you know what to expect. Cedar shakes are generally cut out of western red cedar wood, so they are not as cheap as they once were, but they have instant charm and appeal.
Cedar roofing installation can be done on your own though if you get the right supplies and the proper instructions, so if you are sure you can handle the difficult job, there is money to be saved in a do-it-yourself project. How to Install 1. First decide if you will use cedar shakes or cedar shingles. Shingles are smooth and cut clean while shakes are thicker, hand split and therefore more rustic in look. Using shakes provides solid insulation, moreso than asphalt shingles, so they can help reduce heating and cooling costs. Shakes are also heavier and will require a layer of plywood to be placed on the roof first for added support. 2. Lay down roofing felt at about 18 inches wide along the entire surface of your roof. This will act as an underlayment for the cedar. 3. Start placing your cedar shakes over the felt starting on the left side. Use 2 long roofing nails to secure each piece, and hammer them in about an inch from the bottom of the shake. This will be covered by the overlap. Hang the end shakes over the edge by about 1 inch. 4. Leave a space between each shake of about 3/8-5/8 of an inch. This will allow the cedar shakes to expand and contract depending on the weather conditions. 5. Continue with the next courses, or rows of shakes, overlapping them on top of the previous row to cover the nails. 6. You will need a circular saw to cut the shakes to fit around vents or pipes. 7. Use roofing caulk to cover any exposed nails in the last row of shakes. To install cedar roofing is long and tough, but it is possible to do without professional help. The best thing to do is watch a video or read through detailed instructions before purchasing your products so you have a good idea of what you will need to do, and then prepare for the task at hand. Cedar roofing is unique, albeit on the slightly expensive side, but it will create an elegance to your home that no other style can match.
