Torch Down Roofing Installation Safety Measures
There are different types of flat roofing options, and they range in prices but also in quality. Torch down roofing, or modified bitumen as it is also known, is a single ply roofing option and is very similar to tar and gravel style, but it is more secure and slightly more dangerous to build.
Although it is still not recommended for areas with high rain or snow, it can last about 15 years in good conditions. It is compiled of multiple layers of fiberglass, polyester and bitumen that are placed over top the tar and gravel layers.
These top layers are secured by using a torch to melt the asphalt over the connecting grooves of the overlap. It is a good, durable method to use on flat or slightly sloped roofs and provides a more appealing result than a tar and gravel roof alone. It is a dangerous procedure however if you don't know what you're doing, so get the proper help when planning to install it yourself.
Installation Safety Measures 1. You will need to ensure you have all the equipment you need for the job, namely a hot flame torch, which can be rented from a home renovation center. Additionally, you will need to ensure your safety, so prepare yourself with work boots, work gloves and glasses and protective outerwear before you begin. 2. Determine a safe way to get your equipment to the top of the roof. ask your home renovation center about rooftop delivery options which are common. 3. Check if your old roof is in bad shape or if the torch down roof can be placed overtop. It is not necessary to remove old roofing unless it is cracked or peeling. 4. Look into the newer peel and stick options that you can use in the same way. Lay down the strips easily, without the necessity of roofing cement, and use the torch only to heat and melt the overlaps. Your torch down roofing will be slightly higher in roofing costs, but it will add more durability and a longer lifespan to your roof, for a range of 15-20 years depending on the amount of layers you place down. Using this system can be a fire hazard if you are not skilled using the torch though, so get some information, experience and help to do the job properly. If all is successful, you will have an attractive, secure roof for years to come. |
